Transforming My Parents’ Home

A few years ago, we decided it was best for my parents to be closer to us and their granddaughters. They now live next door on our family farm, and we completely remodeled their home. While my husband and I had tackled smaller projects before, this was our first major renovation together.

The Exterior and Porches

We started with the outside, wanting to completely refresh the traditional 1970s red brick ranch house. After some convincing, my husband embraced the idea of painting the house a warm, welcoming white, a color that glows beautifully at all hours of the day. New wood front doors, black-trimmed windows, and subtle faux rock siding give the home a unique, personal touch.

The porches became a central focus of the transformation. On the front porch, a wood ceiling and rock pillars with wooden caps create an inviting space to linger and enjoy the quiet beauty of the farm. The back porch is a favorite spot for family gatherings, complete with a black railing, soft lights, and a tiled floor. It’s a space to relax, share meals, and watch the kids play, a natural extension of the home where life happens and memories are made.

Interior Transformation

We knew we wanted to create a kitchen, dining, and living area that would host family gatherings and make guests feel at home. My parents love welcoming friends from near and far, so every decision was guided by how the space would feel when it’s full of laughter, conversation, and shared meals.

The kitchen, the heart of the home, features soft white cabinets with subtle hardware for a polished, timeless look. A large island provides storage, extra oven space for holiday cooking, and a comfortable spot for family to gather. Bold black granite countertops serve as a statement piece, while the rest of the finishes remain understated.

Upstairs, dark wood plank floors add warmth throughout, and new black-trimmed farmhouse-style windows, including picture windows in the dining and family rooms, frame peaceful, unobstructed views of the farm.

The bathrooms were designed as retreat-like spaces. The primary bath includes a walk-in shower with wavy white tile, stainless-steel fixtures, heated floors (which my dad enjoys more than anyone!), a backlit mirror, and handcrafted cabinets that add personal charm. The hall bath features a granite shower, black cabinets, farmhouse-style sink, and subtle flooring to allow the shower to remain the focal point.

In the dining room, a large wall was removed to create an open, inviting space for gatherings. The living room is anchored by a 1909 antique piano that my mother loves to play after dinner. Family and friends often gather around to sing along, filling the room with music and joy, a tradition that makes the home feel alive and welcoming.

Every choice, from flooring to finishes, balances elegance, comfort, and everyday family life.

The Basement Transformation

Our family and friends are at the center of everything we do, so transforming the basement was a natural next step. We wanted it to feel welcoming for all ages, a space where comfort and fun coexist.

Warm, neutral walls allow the flooring to shine. My husband envisioned playful patterns with pops of color, and together, we made the space feel lively and inviting. The ceiling, made of a combination of drywall and wood, provides warmth while still allowing access to water lines, if needed.

The basement has become the second heart of the home. We’ve hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas here, and our daughters have their own weekend hangout spot. They even hosted their own New Year’s Eve party, preparing the food themselves.

The space offers something for everyone: a big-screen TV, cozy sitting area with a fireplace, a bar and coffee station, and games and activities for fun and laughter. It’s a lively, versatile space that reflects our family, full of warmth, activity, and togetherness.

A Home Full of Memories

Every decision in this transformation was guided by how the home would be lived in, shared, and enjoyed by family and guests. From the freshly painted exterior to the inviting porches, the warm interior, and the lively basement, the home is bright, welcoming, and full of memories. It’s a place where laughter, music, and togetherness thrive and where new traditions continue to grow for years to come.

At Home With Rita’s, we believe the most meaningful homes are created slowly, shaped by the people who live in them and the moments that matter most. It’s our hope that these thoughts inspire you to create a space that feels comfortable, personal, and entirely your own.
