The Heart of Our Family

One family tradition has always been especially important to us: dinner together. My husband insisted that mealtimes be a sacred part of our day. Both of us grew up in families that shared meals around the table, and we wanted to carry that tradition forward for our girls.

The kitchen has always been more than a place to cook; it’s where everyone gathers to share their day, tease one another, and simply be together. From the very beginning, we made it a phone-free zone. In a world that moves faster than ever, where interruptions are constant, we wanted a space where hearts could be shared, and connections could grow without distraction.

Our daughters don’t cook every week, but they’ve volunteered now and then to prepare a meal, and it’s always a joy to see them in the kitchen. My oldest has introduced some amazing recipes to the family, while my youngest has a particular love for baking, especially banana bread. My parents live next door on the farm, and we often join them for meals or invite them over to ours. Life is busy, and we don’t always manage to eat together, but when we do, it’s a beautiful reminder of the everyday moments we’re so grateful for.

It fills my heart with joy to see the kitchen busy, everyone lending a hand, and to prepare meals I know our family loves. Cooking has become an act of love, a way to slow down, celebrate one another, and savor the small moments that matter most.

Food has a way of bringing people together, creating common ground. At our table, everyone is welcome, whether it’s been a good day or a difficult one, whether we’re celebrating victories or enduring defeats. This is where our blended family’s roots deepened, where bonds formed over laughter, stories, and shared memories.

As our children grow and eventually leave the nest, I hope they carry this tradition with them. I hope they remember that the heart of a family is shaped around shared meals, simple moments of connection, love, and belonging that quietly shape hearts for generations.

At Home With Rita’s is about more than the spaces we create, it’s about the life lived inside them. It’s about gathering, slowing down, and making room for the moments that matter most.
